"Beethoven & Zeuner" - Dorothy Khadem-Missagh
Alongside Beethoven's well-known works "Grande Sonate Pathétique" and "Les Adieux," Dorothy Khadem-Missagh also performs the lesser-known "32 Variations on an Original Theme in C minor, WoO 80," as well as a world premiere recording:
Karl Traugott Zeuner is part of the large group of composers unjustly forgotten by history.
Despite a rich body of work, which includes numerous solo piano pieces, two piano concertos (G major Op. 12 (1817); E-flat major Op. 13 (1823)), chamber music, and ballet music, Zeuner's music never managed to establish itself in the concert repertoire, even though he was able to secure a potent and demanding publisher for his music in the form of Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig. His still entirely unexplored works hold untold treasures, such as the Fantaisie pour le pianoforte sur un air de la Petite Russie, Op. 7, and are worth uncovering – a theme of this recording.
Zeuner was a great admirer of Beethoven's works and had the privilege of meeting him personally in Vienna.
It may be a painful irony that Karl Traugott Zeuner is remembered in music history primarily through his personal connections with Beethoven. All the more valuable, therefore, is the revival of one of his piano works in this recording, made possible by the Archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Wien.
